and the cats are siamese
I'll start with the composition, which I believe to be fantastic. The lines created by the skull and the top of the kittens themselves really help focus the viewers attention, and the balance of 'blank space' and 'occupied space' works really well. I also love the neutral tones, which contrast really well with the bright blue kitten eyes.
The next thing I notice when looking at the image are the textures. The kittens look so soft and cuddly, while the roughness of the skull and wooden table (or floor), really contrast this.
Now onto the concept of the photo. I see a clear link to the contrast of life and death, which in terms of concept, is always a great one to explore, and I personally have never seen it done like this, and that makes the image particularly interesting to me!
Finally, I also love the lighting, it creates just the perfect amount of shadow and highlights, and as it appears natural, helps sort of bring a 'real life' feeling to the photo, which adds a sort of eerie element to the overall image, especially when considering the concept.
For me there is only one thing that could be changed to improve this fabulous image, and that would be to have all the kittens facing the camera directly, as I believe this would increase the creepiness of the photo. I of course understand that to get three kittens to look in one direction would be very difficult, and not necessarily something the photographer could have done even if they wanted to.
In the end, I personally find this to be a near perfect image, that creates interest and intrigue, and leaves the viewer with a sort of confused and unsettled feeling. Ultimately, if an image can illicit some sort of feeling in the viewer, that is what I believe changes an image from 'a good photo' to an 'artwork', and Three of Cats is definitely an artwork.
It's such a unique shot and very original. What kind of skull is that? It looks like a dinosaur to me, but it could be something else, of course.
Each of the kittens have a cute pose and seem to have their own story. They're very beautiful and I can't believe how vibrant their eyes are. I think my favorite is the one on the right staring off to the side. I bet it was hard to get them all to hold still long enough for such a beautiful photo, so kudos to you for that.
